In 1985, returning to her childhood home on the Philadelphia Main Line—a wealthy enclave of glamour and privilege-- Professor Hillary Sherman wakes up the first night home to find that her usually proper mother, Dolly Scott, has been arrested for trespassing on her former estate, claiming she is desperate to find a treasure trove of jewelry she buried thirty-five tears ago.
Why is the jewelry missing? Who else knew about this secret stash? Was it the delinquent son desperate to run off? Or perhaps it was the religious daughter zealously intent on giving the family's wealth to the church? Could the culprit be the withdrawn, secretive husband, or was it the "faithful" gardener whose housekeeper wife was privy to all the family's goings on?
Alternating between memories of growing up in the 1950s and conversations in the 1980s, a potent brew of secrets, betrayals, and domestic abuse emerges as the young, rebellious Hillary tries to make sense of it all and, years later, finally solves the mystery.
This period family drama explores the inter-dynamic of three generations, the price of pride, and the excesses of youth, Unraveled is a tale rich with found treasures the bonds of family, and the redemptive power of love.

Battling insomnia following a recent surgery, I gave up and turned to “Unraveled,” a novel I had purchased because the author is a classmate from high school days. I remembered her as possessing wit and intelligence, so I didn’t think my money would be wasted in the purchase. I wanted something to engage me, to distract me, to get me through the wee small hours of restlessness and discomfort. I was not disappointed. “Unraveled” is a page-turner, and reading it got me through the sleepless hours. The author knows her characters, and I found myself wondering (no, pretty convinced) that some of the story was autobiographical. I won’t spoil the plot, but it is deftly written and held my attention easily. Navigating insomnia requires good stuff, and this book has it.

Really enjoyed this novel! I was easily captivated by the dynamics of this privileged Philadelphia Main Line family. Bravo Nancy on your first novel!
This book definitely holds your attention, the characters become so real; I could see this on the big screen someday.
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. The characters were very believable the situations they were placed. it read like true life. It was herd to put it down while waiting for the next problem to arise. Well constructed.
The story is captivating. The characters were well developed. The language brought back the 50s I'd forgotten. I highly recommend this book.
Just ordered my copy. Can't wait!
Unraveled is a good read with interesting flashes of the past interwoven with the present as the story unfolds, excellent character development, and beautiful descriptions, not to mention the stunning surprise at the end.
This is a real page turner. The characters are carefully drawn and the plot follows their actions very smoothly. Although I enjoyed the book, there were times when I squirmed at the memories from those times - the 1950s - which I lived through. The interactions between men and women were so...shall we say, unenlightened in those days - and the author pulls no punches in showing us the unhappiness that ensues from these interactions.
I could imagine a contemporary girl or young woman - maybe my granddaughter - asking why the women in the book put up with the thoughtless and sometimes abusive behavior from the boys and men.
This is what a good novel should do after all - it should make us squirm occasionally - and think about things. Thanks to the author for a multi-faceted book and a good read.
